National Adaptive Stress Research Institute
Founded in 1983 as an independent domestic defense contractor, the National Adaptive Stress Research Institute (NASRI) specializes in complex human system diagnostics, socio-biological data modeling, and high-consequence continuity planning. Operating at the intersection of behavioral dynamics and computational complexity science, our human factors division assists municipal, industrial, and federal partners in optimizing infrastructure resilience during prolonged operational stress environments.
The Institute is privately held. It is not a government agency, it is not federally chartered, and it holds no chartering instrument of any kind. It performs work under contract, on a task order basis, for public and private sponsors. Sponsor identities are disclosed only where the terms of the applicable contract permit disclosure.
Our core methodologies lean heavily on the Evolutionary-Stress Framework (ESF). By mapping macro-level societal variables against micro-level neurological and biochemical thresholds, NASRI develops predictive modeling tools to insulate key workforces, logistics frameworks, and civilian populations against systemic failure cascades.

The ESF is the Institute's governing analytic model. It treats an affected population as a system with measurable load limits rather than as an aggregate of individual cases. Macro-level societal variables, including supply interruption, communication loss, and authority ambiguity, are mapped against micro-level neurological and biochemical thresholds recorded in observed cohorts. The output is a set of load curves that a planner can use to estimate when a given function stops being performed.
SBCM applies complexity science principles to understand how large, interconnected civilian networks react under unexpected resource constraints. Raw neuro-chemical stress metrics are translated into actionable operational directives intended to maintain baseline continuity. The mapping is nondirectional. It describes what a network does under constraint without recommending a preferred outcome.
NTO evaluates varied psychological and cognitive baselines within a population matrix. Rather than treating stress response as a uniform curve, our systems map variations in human processing to identify unique endurance advantages and psychological vulnerabilities within active technical environments. Findings are used in personnel placement and in the design of task assignments for extended-duty positions.
ESFM formulates baseline data patterns for human behavioral compliance during extended isolation scenarios. Protocols focus on mitigating panic contagion vectors and sustaining institutional cohesion inside tightly restricted containment zones or critical infrastructure hubs exceeding 72 hours of uninterrupted stress. Compliance is logged at fixed intervals and reported as a decay curve against elapsed time.

Dr. Ellery founded the National Adaptive Stress Research Institute in 1983 and served as its president and chief executive officer until 1994, when he was named chairman of the board. He is the principal author of the Evolutionary-Stress Framework and remains the Institute's senior technical authority on stress physiology and behavioral resilience modeling.
Dr. Ellery holds a Ph.D. in stress physiology and human performance from Johns Hopkins University, awarded 1970. Prior to founding the Institute he held research positions in the private sector and in academia. He has authored or coauthored 31 technical reports for the Institute, a portion of which appear under Publications and Technical Reports.
Dr. Ellery personally facilitates every research run conducted by the Institute. He is present at the field site for the full duration of each run, sets the conditions under which it is carried out, and signs the closing record. No run has been conducted in his absence since the Institute was founded. Correspondence for Dr. Ellery is received at the mailing address below and is not forwarded.
One outside directorship has been vacant since October 1998. The board meets quarterly. Minutes are not published.
Work involving human participants is reviewed by an internal review panel constituted under the Institute's standard operating procedure SOP-4.11. The panel comprises five members, at least two of whom hold no line responsibility for the program under review. Panel determinations are recorded and retained under the applicable records retention schedule.
